EDUCATION

The Future of Education Requirements (with AI)

Chart showing higher education and AII

Learn to code? Maybe notā€¦

According to a report by Indeed, those with higher levels of education may generally be at more risk of getting uprooted by AI.

ā€œThe analysis found that exposure to GenAI was generally highest for knowledge workers and in tech categories including software development, IT operations & helpdesk, and information design & documentation. Exposure was typically lowest in many hands-on, in-person roles ā€” including driving, child care, and beauty & wellness ā€” that generally require less formal education.ā€

In the past, it has typically been blue-collar jobs that have been changed by technology. Now? White-collar jobs might be ripe for disruption.

NVIDIA CEO, Jensen Huang recently went on the record stating that coding might not be a viable career path soon. Crazy to imagine that a job function so necessary to so many companies might be rendered obsolete.

The good news? Technology replaces old jobs and new jobs are then created.

On Tuesday, we ran a poll asking you how worried you are about AI disrupting your job.

Below are the results:

  • 54% said ā€œnot at all worriedā€

  • 46% said ā€œa little worried!ā€

COMPANIES

Elon Goes on a Suing Spree

Elon Musk is suing OpenAI for breaching its founding agreement, alleging that the company is now pursuing profits rather than developing AI for the benefit of humanity.

Recently, Elon also backed the fired Mandalorian actress, Gina Carano against Disney in a lawsuit.

Carano was fired in February of 2021 after a post that compared the persecution Jewish people faced during the Holocaust to the hatred people have toward others on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Carano deleted the post and clarified what she meant after being called every ā€˜istā€™ and ā€˜phobicā€™ in the book, but was still fired after pressure from the media and public.

Back to the most recent lawsuitā€¦

Elon was one of OpenAIā€™s co-founders and earliest investors, funding them since 2015 based on a promise that they ā€œwould focus on public, open-source technology that wouldnā€™t be subject to corporate priorities.ā€

He stepped down from the board in 2018, presumed to focus on some of his smaller companies like Tesla and SpaceX.

But it gets juicierā€¦

Recently, OpenAI released this blog post sharing their side of the story.

According to the post, this is a summarized timeline of events:

  • 2015 - OpenAI planned to raise $100M. Elon, a co-founder, believed that they should raise $1B.

  • 2017 - OpenAI realized they would need a lot more capital and decided to transition from a non-profit to a for-profit. (OpenAI claims they made this decision with Elon).

  • 2017 Elon demands majority equity, initial board control, and to be CEO. He withholds funding and Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn founder) bridges the funding gap.

  • 2018 - Elon lobbied for OpenAI to join Tesla. ā€œTesla is the only path that could even hope to hold a candle to Google. Even then, the probability of being a counterweight to Google is small. It just isnā€™t zeroā€.

  • 2018 - Elon leaves OpenAI stating that its probability of success is 0.

ā€œWe need to go with a much bigger number than $100M to avoid sounding hopelessā€¦ I think we should say that we are starting with a $1B funding commitmentā€¦ I will cover whatever anyone else doesn't provide.ā€

When OpenAI posted its blog post on X, Elon clapped back by saying ā€œChange your name to closed AI and I will drop the lawsuitā€.

Hilarious. Master troll.

OpenAIā€™s version: Elon left the company because he didnā€™t believe it would work.

Elonā€™s version: OpenAI was supposed to be open-sourced and a non-profit.

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out. We have our popcorn ready.

Employer Wants $200M Backā€¦

Last week, employees of the city Zurich in Switzerland got a welcome surprise to their bank accountsā€¦Double their monthly salary!!

But now the city is asking for it all back (of course).

Zurich authorities have apologized to city employees after a technical glitch caused a double payment of monthly salaries that local officials are now trying to claw back. Officials are trying to design a streamlined process so the 30,000 employees affected by the glitch can return the money.

The city says a state-owned bank is to blame. The bank says faulty software from Swisscom is to blame. Workers say inflation is to blame and are demanding a repeat!

ā€œSwisscom is aware of the seriousness of this incident and apologizes for the inconvenience causedā€

Sounds like a one month vacation and extra guac at Chipotle!
