The Best and Worst of 2024
2024 had its highs and lows. A total solar eclipse, a presidential election, the biggest rap battle of the decade, and the dreaded RTO mandates. It’s only fitting that Glassdoor’s word of the year for 2024 is “divisive.” Here’s the rundown on what career professionals cared about and discussed in 2024 the most in communities on Glassdoor:
Mentions of “divisive” itself grew 33% in 2024. These stemmed from a range of issues, including election concerns, toxic workplaces, and shifts in company stances on DEI initiatives.
From economic uncertainty to layoffs, many professionals (im)patiently awaited the results of the presidential election all year and didn’t shy away from discussing politics at work. Mentions of “election” saw the biggest jump among terms we analyzed, rising by 202%.
More positively, some workers began to embrace AI and engage in healthy dialogue around the use of it. But the reviews on its future were still mixed — some are still weary of it, but the “AI is coming for our jobs” fears seemed to have lessened. Mentions of “AI” grew by 42%.
Ghosting by employees and employers gained significant traction in 2024, signaling a shift in professional engagement norms and often frustrating workers while job searching. Mentions of “ghosting” grew by 46%.
TikTok buzzwords, old bosses contacting new jobs, and unfair performance reviews were also at the top of the list of things trending in the workplace.

Hospitals are Reducing Turnover
A shocking new study from Aon has revealed that paying employees more decreases turnover. That has to be fake news. Who could’ve come up with such a genius idea?! This story is indeed real and should be an eye-opener to companies struggling with the woes of high turnover.
Here are the main findings of the survey:
Better pay and benefits have stabilized employee turnover at U.S. hospitals, leading to significant decreases in turnover rates for nurses, non-physician clinical staff, and physicians in 2024 compared to 2023.
Reports of increased turnover among nurses declined from 62% to 7%; among non-physician clinical positions from 41% to 5%; and among physicians from 22% to 9%.
70% of hospitals during the past year have increased new-hire pay; 69% have implemented or bolstered sign-on bonuses; 61% have increased minimum-wage scales; 46% offered higher-than-market wages; and 44% have modified their total rewards offering for all employees.
Here are some additional quick hits on how hospitals are supporting their staff:
70% enhancing voluntary benefits.
67% enhancing tuition reimbursement.
65% offering more financial wellness and planning resources.
40% adding prescription home delivery.
36% offering more student loan repayment or restructuring programs.
32% enhancing employee assistance programs and mental health provider networks.
32% adding nutritional counseling.
24% adding onsite daycare.
