New Hiring Tech Just Dropped
Spoiler: It’s AI-related…
Another new use for AI has found its way into the recruiting world and in typical internet fashion, people have mixed opinions.
Chatbots have been around for some time, even before the explosion of AI. The most common use is customer service inquiries or acting as a virtual secretary.
Now, companies are using AI-enabled chatbots to fuel “chat-to-apply” technology which companies are using to funnel high volumes of candidates through the hiring process.
Just what you wanted…to talk to another AI chatbot…
“Vendors are very keen to share how [generative AI] can improve the efficacy of chatbots and take over more of the recruiting process. It’s positioned as a benefit for buyers whose recruiting teams have been squeezed in recent years with the focus on operating efficiency and numerous layoffs.”
So far, it’s unclear if candidates have fully embraced the idea of chat-to-apply technology, even though they may not have a choice for some roles.
Here are the pros and cons according to experts in the field:
Pros:
Chatbots can be used as a simplified application form where candidates are prompted to input only the information that the company finds most valuable. This increases the speed and efficiency of the process for both candidates and companies.
Chat-to-apply can identify which candidates are most likely going to be good fits as they’re applying, and schedule an interview, or even offer them an instant interview with a live person.
The ability to answer questions 24/7 is a big bonus because candidates often seek info outside of traditional business hours.
A chat-to-apply bot also may be able to identify when a candidate is struggling with the process and offer them help from a real person, who can take over and help them through the process.
Cons:
One early drawback that candidates and recruiters have noticed is that chatbots pick up on spelling and grammar errors, which may be unfair to candidates who simply “fat-finger” a response. Grammar errors are likely to lead to the chatbot ranking a candidate lower on the totem pole.
According to Forrester’s Global Government, Society and Trust Survey, only 29% of U.S. adults trust the information an AI chatbot provides.
Chat-to-apply could present legal problems if it has any mechanisms in its algorithm to eliminate applicants. AI discrimination has been a problem in recent years, so this new mechanism of high-volume applicant screening will be under intense scrutiny in the short term.
WORKPLACE
The CEO Who Doesn’t Believe in Meetings
Main job of a CEO? Going back-to-back all day in meetings.
Or maybe not…
In a speech at Stanford University earlier this summer, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said he avoids pretty much all meetings.
(Must be nice)
The company has 55 executives who report directly to the CEO, but Huang says he doesn’t do one-on-ones with any of them.
The billionaire CEO says frequent meetings would clutter his schedule and hinder the broader team’s capacity to address challenges, work effectively, and maintain transparency.
He also doesn’t write reviews for any of his executives. He says he constantly gives them reviews and they do the same for him, but with an emphasis on efficiency.
“They never hear me say something to them, that is only for them to know. There’s not one piece of information that I somehow secretly tell the staff; I don’t tell the rest of the company. In that way, our company was designed for agility. For information to be to flow as quickly as possible. For people to be empowered by what they are able to do, not what they know.”
The NVIDIA CEO says while he values efficiency over everything, he will still “drop everything” for any individual employee that needs his time. Seems like he’s created a pretty cool work environment for his employees!
Here are examples of other companies that have reduced or completely ditched meetings:
Pandora’s CEO says too many meetings result in every department or company issue getting equal attention, whether or not they need it. He says he tries to insert himself where he’s needed and that’s it. He also encourages lower-level managers to ditch all the meetings and focus on efficiency.
Zoom founder Eric Yuan thinks meetings are such a drain on time that he’s developing a “digital twin” to sit in on meetings so employees can get real work done.
Shopify took it a step further and actually axed all meetings involving more than two people last year, in a company-wide “calendar purge” meant to give employees more time to work on other tasks.
If the Zoom founder doesn’t believe in meetings…what does that say?!
