Should be a fun one!

Side Hustles

Side Hustles Are BOOMING

More than a third (36%) of Americans have a side hustle, according to a new Bankrate survey of over 2,000 workers. The average side hustler brings in $891 extra per month, up 10% from a similar survey last year. There are some differences among generations, and not everyone is bringing in hundreds of dollars per month.

Gen Z workers are the most likely to have a side hustle with nearly half (48%) saying they do. We wouldn’t consider streaming Minecraft on Twitch a real side hustle, so take that with a grain of salt. 44% of millennials also reported having a side hustle, followed by 33% of Gen Xers, and finally 23% of Boomers. Millennials are making the most extra cash, bringing in an average of $1,129 per month. In comparison, Boomers are bringing in an extra $561 per month. Pretty good for selling mittens at the farmers market!

According to Taskrabbit, the most in-demand service is furniture assembly, which pays an average of $41 per hour. One of the most in-demand skills on Upwork’s freelance marketplace is data analytics, which pays ~$167/hour. Dog walking and Etsy/Poshmark were among the top for other popular side hustles. For workers who want to bring in some extra cash, sidehusl.com is a great place for ideas on where to start!

Layoffs

The Latest In Layoffs

Probably not a great idea to look for jobs at these companies right now. Here are the most recent layoff announcements, according to MacroEdge:

  • Microsoft has laid off its internal DEI team. Will cut ~2,000 jobs this month.

  • StubHub will lay off around 400 employees in Utah.

  • John Deere is reportedly warning staff of widespread salaried employee layoffs from July 24-26th, after axing manufacturing employees.

  • Truist Financial Corp. is gearing up for a series of job reductions within its technology department.

  • Spotify is cutting members of its sales team in another round of layoffs as it merges two divisions.

  • SolarEdge to eliminate around 10% of its global workforce as green energy hype dies without low rates.

  • Salesforce is cutting hundreds of jobs in latest wave of CRM giant’s austerity.

  • CNN has quietly disbanded its Race and Equality (DEI) team. Will cut 3% of total workforce.

  • Unilever will eliminate 3,200 office jobs.

  • GE Appliances, based in Kentucky, will eliminate 4% of its global workforce - affecting hundreds of workers in Kentucky.

  • Intuit - a tax and financial software - is laying off around 2,000 employees.

  • Luxury brand Burberry is preparing to axe hundreds of jobs.

  • UKG - a leading software company - is laying off 2,200 employees.

  • Restaurant chain Mod Pizza is reportedly preparing to file bankruptcy. Horrible news.

Jobs

The job that’s always in demand and can pay over $100k without a degree

You don’t need a stacked resume with 20 years of experience or a bachelor’s degree to land a six-figure job. Even amid record-breaking layoffs and hiring freezes, one IBM executive says there’s a high-paying role that’s “always” in demand: project manager.

“Businesses always need project managers, not just in tech but also in retail, marketing and a dozen other industries. It’s a core role that touches on so many different functions within a business: project managers can work with the finance, tech, legal departments, you name it.”

-Lydia Logan, IBM’s vice president of global education and workforce development.

Most project management roles aren’t anything fancy, just exactly what they sound like. Usually, project managers are responsible for planning, organizing, and managing a project, ensuring it’s completed on time and within budget. Projects can range from simple marketing campaigns to the construction of new buildings, which is why project managers are needed in all industries.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, project management jobs will grow 6% in the next decade - significantly faster than the average for occupations overall. The Project Management Institute estimates that employers will need 25 million workers in project management roles by 2030, meaning roughly two million people will need to enter the field each year to keep up with the demand.

Most project management roles require a high school diploma or GED and completion of a professional certification course or training. Certifications and training are offered by some universities as well as companies like Google and IBM. Some of them don’t even cost anything!

Companies like IBM, Amazon, and JP Morgan & Chase are among the top companies hiring for project managers, according to Glassdoor research. The median salary for project managers is up to over $102k compared to $87k from a decade ago. Indeed has dozens of remote project manager roles listed that pay upwards of $200k!

For job seekers who are looking to land a high-paying role, the first step is to create an account with JobParty.AI. Next, ask the career coach to help optimize your LinkedIn profile and resume for a project management role at your desired company. Lastly, start planning the first thing you’ll buy with your first paycheck!
