AI

Is The AI Hype Dead?!

About this time last year people were predicting a mass AI takeover where everyone gets replaced by robots and language models.

Good news, they were wrong!

AI is still probably the biggest disruption to the workforce, but its use in the workplace is slowing considerably. According to Slack’s Workforce Index, many workers are hesitant to admit to AI usage and say they don’t have the proper training.

As a result, the number of people using AI has leveled off to almost flat.

During the last three months, U.S. worker AI adoption rates grew from 32% to 33%, marking a significant slowdown from an 8 percentage point increase a year ago.

“Too much of the burden has been put on workers to figure out how to use AI. To ensure adoption of the technology, it’s important that leaders not only train workers but encourage employees to talk about it and experiment with AI out in the open.”

-Christina Janzer, SVP of research and analytics at Slack

Despite the uncertainty about AI at work, employees said they want to build AI skills, and 76% said they feel the urgency to become an AI expert. However, 61% have spent fewer than five hours on AI learning, and 30% said they’ve had no AI training at all, including self-directed learning or experimentation.

Workers also said they expect AI-savvy employers, with 3 in 4 saying a factor in their job search includes the employer’s ability to provide and enable workers with AI tools. In addition, 2 in 5 workers said they’d prefer working for companies that provide AI tools and enable their use. According to another Slack report, more than 2 in 3 workers have never used AI at work.

Cheers to the robots not taking over (for now).

REMOTE WORK

Job Seekers Are Still Looking For Flexibility

According to Flexa, a remote and flexible job site, 59% of job seekers are looking for “fully remote” roles, but only 2% of posted jobs advertised such an arrangement. Q3 of 2024 had the “highest number of flexible job hunters ever recorded,” according to a statement from Flexa.

Over the last 18 months, demand for fully remote roles has continually increased while related job posts have been on a steady decline due to companies’ RTO mandates. However, more than 75% of posted jobs advertised hybrid work (1-4 days in the office), but only 11% of job seekers said they preferred hybrid roles.

In September, a majority of CEOs told KPMG they expect a full return to office within the next three years. Right after that survey was released, Resume Builder released a survey of their own which revealed roughly 20% of workers plan to ignore their company’s RTO mandate and face the potential consequences. The standoff continues!
