Latest In Layoffs, per MacroEdge

  • Wells Fargo to trim Oregon workforce by 700 next year amid office closures in the state.

  • Airbus cuts over 2,000 jobs.

  • Microchip Technology Inc., a maker of chips for cars, consumer devices and other products, said it would close a plant in Tempe, Arizona, affecting about 500 employees.

  • Ingram Micro, a technology company, announced on Monday the company plans to lay off nearly 850 employees by the end of the first quarter of 2025 as part of a 'restructuring initiative.'

  • Cargill will eliminate around 8,200 positions globally after the largest privately held company in the US missed profit targets.

  • Tyson Foods on Monday announced to employees it would close its facility in Emporia in February 2025, impacting around 1,000 employees.

  • CVS will layoff nearly 1,000 employees in Rhode Island in late January, per filing with the state.

  • General Motors laid off 507 employees at its GM Global Technical Center.

  • Microsoft’s LinkedIn lays off hundreds of employees.

  • Robert Bosch said on Friday the company plans to cut up to 5,550 jobs.

  • JPMorgan is shedding approximately 10% of its Bay Area workforce, impacting hundreds of employees.

  • Marriott, a major employer headquartered in Bethesda, plans to cut more than 800 jobs, or around 16% of its HQ.

  • The Associated Press told staff it plans to reduce its staff count by 8% through layoffs and voluntary buyouts.

Tips for Avoiding Holiday Party Headaches

The “experts” over at GoldbergSegalla, a civil litigation firm, have shared some advice on how to avoid conflict at office holiday parties this year. Some of these we agree with; others, not so much. Regardless, here are tips from the HR “experts.”

  • Make attendance voluntary. This is a good call. Most office parties suck anyways (besides this one, of course).

    • “This is critical from a wage and hour perspective. If events are held after hours or on weekends, an employer should not mandate attendance, as this will be considered compensable time under wage and hour laws for non-exempt employees.”

  • Avoid any themes or references to any specific religious or cultural holidays. Ehh, we get it. But everyone loves a nice looking Christmas tree and jingle bells, right?! Also, instead of celebrating no holidays, why not celebrate them all?!

    • “Employers should aim to make these end-of-year events as inclusive as possible and should avoid references to religious or cultural celebrations, including the party’s decorations and music.”

  • Limit alcohol consumption. BOOOOOO!!!!!! Enough said.

  • Written reminders to employees. An email would probably suffice, but this one is a nice idea to save your HR department some headaches.

    • “Before the party, all employees should be reminded of the company’s anti-harassment, non-discrimination and drug and alcohol policies and acknowledge these reminders.”

CEO wants employees to work 84 hours a week

A tech startup CEO admits he is looking for employees willing to work 84 hours a week. That’s not a typo.

Daksh Gupta, who runs an artificial intelligence startup Greptile in San Francisco, in a recent post on X explained he wants his team to work from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at least five days a week, and often on weekends, to be competitive.

Gupta has received backlash on social media from workers and other CEOs, but he says he’s also got a number of applications. He says he’s hiring software engineers “interested in "hard work and a big payday down the road.”

"It's a rocket launch in some ways. And when you have two groups of smart people that are trying to solve the same problem, the one that works harder and is luckier wins. And you can't control your luck, but you can control how much time you put in. If you care about work-life balance, I think that's great. There's plenty of places that operate that way and they're very successful."
