Trump’s impact on the workforce

America has a new boss! That could mean big changes for certain sectors, and potentially for the country’s workforce as a whole. Here are the top stories since Trump’s inauguration on how the public and private workforce may be affected:

This analysis sheds light on our nation’s federal civilian workforce during the Trump administration. What changes occurred throughout the administration’s four years? Did past trends continue or change under President Donald Trump? The Partnership for Public Service analyzed federal workforce data to answer these and other questions.

Federal agencies must develop plans to reduce the size of their workforces through efficiencies and attrition, President Trump announced on Monday, spelling out in a memorandum that they must roll out those proposals before lifting the hiring freeze he has put into place. Trump also froze federal hiring when he took office in 2017.

In one of his first actions as President of the United States, Donald Trump issued an executive order on Monday ending remote work for all federal employees—a move intended to reduce the federal workforce through attrition.

President Trump signed an executive order Monday dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives within the federal government. The president and his allies, particularly White House adviser Stephen Miller, have been outspoken critics of DEI — helping drive the wider backlash in the private sector.

The classification, which makes it easier to fire federal workers, is also the subject of congressional legislation. Schedule F removes protections for significant portions of the federal workforce and turns certain civil servants into “at-will” employees. A 2020 executive order from Trump created Schedule F in the excepted service. President Joe Biden rescinded that action when he took office, but on the campaign trail in 2024, Trump promised to reissue the order to “remove rogue bureaucrats” and “wield that power aggressively.”
